Even when not in the middle of an aid distribution, most people I speak with here are appreciative of the US troop presence in the country. Some are skeptical about its long-term goals. There's hope that the troops will focus less on "securing" areas of the country and work more closely with local Haitian leaders to distribute aid to the many areas that haven't received it.

  • There needs to be massive education in Haiti about the true impact of US foreign and trade policies on Haiti so folks will not be embracing their malefactors as benefactors.

  • This is not much better than corporate media coverage.  The US had a lot to do with the 2004 coup. There is no way that the US will let Aristide come back. This is a pretty photo op, but the presence of US troops in Haiti has never done the Haitians much good. And why do I keep remembering "Democracy, whiskey, sexy"?
