This was the Pathfinder 'Retro Retracer' rail tour which ran on a very wet Bank Holiday Monday 28th May 2007. It was a mixed traction tour from Bristol Temple Meads, Birmingham New Street, Worksop, Leeds, Crewe, and then back to Bristol Temple Meads. For two and a half hours Class 40 40145 hauled the tour from Leeds to Crewe, and so here we see the CFPS flagship locomotive motoring through Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire at about 1550 hrs at a speed of approximately 60/70mph and heading towards Copy Pit. This made a rare and extraordinary sight after waiting on the platform for four hours suffering an endless array of diesel multiple units coming and going. The Class 40 Preservation Society engineer Dave Peacock, helped along with his maintenance gang, once again produced a finely-tuned machine fit for any royal occasion.

  • That's just how I remember it John at the beginning of the 80's, fantastic. Nothing sounds as good as a 40.

  • Thanks Richard, Sadly I cannot remember the Class 40's in their heyday but I have plenty books and images and this youtube file is really fantastic, just as you say. Thanks for your comment. John Wantling, Rochdale

  • The quickest I have ever seen a train come through the valley was D200 a couple of years after it was reinstated when it seemed to be (and sounded) flat out, but it expired by the time it reached Moston. One of our friends was on the railtour and he said it was a relentless thrashing but well worth it, even for the short distance (I think it started in Leeds)

  • Richard, those were the days.... A Deltic ran through Hebden Bridge last year. I put my camera on multiple picture mode but the engine ran through so fast that it was too fast for the camera! I got one fairly decent shot. John Wantling, Rochdale

  • I bet that was something! If you haven't seen them already, there are some really fine photographs on Neil Harvey's modern traction website, in particular Deltics on the Worth Valley and the calder valley.

  • Richard, Thanks for the link. I have just made it a favourite and will take a closer look later on but some excellent pictures on the site. John Wantling, Rochdale

  • I think a 20 year old blonde with big tits taking it the pea and ham fritter, may sound marginally better than a 40 passing through hiipyville. Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrriiiiighht.

  • Thanks andyhebden, it is a nice one and a Class 40 is a fantastic sight at Hebden Bridge. John Wantling, Rochdale

  • Thanks 2gunboy, I think that 40145 gives quite a number of people the chills and so pleased you enjoyed this file. John Wantling, Rochdale, UK
