Queen Mary's attempts to restore Catholicism and her marriage to Philip of Spain (July 25, 1554) were unpopular. Mary supported harsher and harsher persecution of the Protestants, eventually burning more than 300 at the stake as heretics over a four year period, earning her the nickname, "Bloody Mary."
She died in 1558, Mary named no heir, so Elizabeth (Mary's half-sister, daughter of Ann Boleyn) became Queen, named by Henry VIII (Mary and Elizabeth's father) as next in succession after Mary.

  • Bloody Mary was no more 'Bloody' than Elizabeth.

  • @Vort317545 The Catholic Church is guilty of massacres more than anything else. Yup religion is to blame but these "Protestants" were NOT really Christians if they think they can murder in God's name. Jesus didn't command murder but love for enemies, praying for those who persecute them.

  • @mst3k4evur True, but is daughter is know as "Bloody Mary", he killed more people than her by a big margin.

  • @md991free

No need to give him a special title like 'bloody', everyone thinks 'murdering bastard' when they hear 'Henry VIII'.

  • @mst3k4evur Their father was the bloodiest of them all, he should be called Bloody Henry.

  • I swear I might shoot myself the next time you say "open a history book". And okay, you're right, the purgatory doctrine has been around since the early church. However (here's where I entertain your damned need for a history book citation), according to A History of Western Society by McKay, the a significant amount of emphasis (FAR greater than before) had been placed on the doctrine during the selling of indulgences. And, be that as it may, purgatory isn't even Biblical.

  • @ProvokingYoVillian You are seriously mis-informed. Purgatory was always believed, otherwise it would of not fit the requirements for being proclaimed doctrine anyway. Yes, there were some abuses concerning the selling of indulgences, for building St Peters Basilica for example, but these were eradicated through the Council of Trent. As I said earlier, open a history book, and perhaps a theology book aswell, if you don't want to look like an utter fool when discussing Church history.

  • @assasincomedy Secondly, the purgatory was not "always believed". When the Catholic churched relocated temporarily to Avignon in France (Late Middle Ages), it was cut off from Roman estates and was in need of funds. Pope Clement VI began selling indulgences and to make this more enticing to the layman, the church introduced the purgatory doctrine. People could buy reduced purgatory sentences for themselves or their loved ones. It was a gimmick.

  • Obviously I'm not going to initially pour my evidences into a YouTube comment. And don't just assume I'm drawing upon biased documentaries. I'm no historian but I've taken AP European history and know a thing or two about the subject. First of all, in my opinion, the Catholic church was wrong (and essentially corrupt) in seeking and/or maintaining secular power (which I believe is a result of worldly desire which they were incapable of overcoming).

  • This movie is nothing but English jingoistic garbage. Elizabeth was much, much, much worse.

  • @ProvokingYoVillian Open a history book, don't just rely on documentaries and biased English points of view. The Church was never 'corrupt'. The stereotypical 'corrupt' Church is utter nonsense. Yes, there were some corrupt individuals within the Church, a minority I might add, but that in no way justifies calling the entire Church 'corrupt'. Purgatory has always been believed. As I said before, stay off the anti-catholic sources, it was not 'made up', or to 'make a quick buck'.

  • I shake my head at the catholic church, corrupt for most of it's history, save its humble beginning. Even the purgatory doctrine was conjured so the church could make a quick buck.
