it throws them of balance too. mine has a huge tube collar on at the mo but it is very restricting although is has accepted it to a certain extent

I'm sorry about that...I hate to see him so plucked. Do you just have to wean them off of the collar? Like have them spend alot of time with it on at first, and maybe they'll understand that if they pluck, the collar comes on...and then over time they hopefully stop?

Does he ever get sort of comfortable with it? What I mean is, does he ever stop trying to remove it and just sit and rest? Will it even perch?

Yes they do eventually give up if the collar is the right size and they can not reach the edge.
After an hour or so they will stop fighting with it.
I do not like them even then because birds get very depressed and in most cases they go back to mutilating or feather picking once the collar is removed.
Preening is a normal behavior in birds and we want them to be able to do it. The collar does not allow them to do it. It is usually much better if we use a different type of collar.
