Luck and how to get it differs greatly from culture to culture. I was surprised to learn in Singapore that in the Chinese realm, Luck is not something you can get for yourself. It must be given to you by someone else.

One of the most popular Chinese symbols of good luck is the pinyin characters for fu which represents good luck or good fortune. An ancient Chinese tradition that dates back to the Zhou Dynasty, which began in 256 B.C., and is still practiced during the Chinese Spring Festival and Chinese New Year, is hanging a fu symbol on your front door. In ancient times the fu symbol was used to keep away the Goddess of Poverty. In modern times the symbol represents a year of good luck, prosperity and happiness.
