WOW! fruit fly research is a useless pet project....I don't think she realizes that the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is a model organism for the study of human genetics. A lot can be learned in how genes are expressed in humans just by studying them in fruit flies. It thus makes it rather INEXPENSIVE and much more ETHICAL to study gene expression in flies than in humans.
