1973 Mark and Melissa Militano - US Nationals LP

Mark and Melissa revisited "Scherezade" in 73 to win a National title. The program was actually improved upon, but their performances of it faltered. Mark had a "Johnny Weir" moment in this National event, skipping some footwork and a lift; and then later at Worlds, even more problems aroze. That was the famous Bratislava, Czechoslavokia event where Rodnina and Zaitsev's music quit. Mark and Melissa tried twice to perform their program but stopped for problems with flowers and trash on the ice, injuries. Mark eventually stompt off in disgust. They were finally allowed to come back and skate at the end of the event, but the long wait took the shine off their effort.

Their costumes are just great though, aren't they? They really stepped up the sophistication of skating, and were one of the first "artists" on the ice.

I think Midori Ito, followed closely by the first American ladies triple axel, Tonya Harding. 1991 as I recall. best wishes

as brother and sister, they were perfectly matched. It's his insistence on perfectionism that made him quit the sport and made Melissa go on to skate with Johnny Johns a year later after winning "Gold".

I wonder if he was actually really physically exhausted--not that he was pissed. The performance wasn't THAT bad...to justify acting like that.
