Pulitzer Prize-winning author Garry Wills discusses the letters of Saint Paul, arguing that certain anachronisms in the Apostle's writing have led to undeserved criticism from many modern scholars.
-----
Garry Wills on "What Paul Meant."
Wills sets out to correct St. Paul's longstanding reputation as the man who corrupted Jesus's message. Reminding us that the epistles are older than the gospels and, therefore, more authoritative renderings of Jesus's teachings. Wills describes the early church as more of an outgrowth of Judaism than a radical departure. - Politics and Prose
Garry Wills is an adjunct professor and cultural historian whose many books include penetrating studies of George Washington, Richard Nixon, the Kennedy family, Ronald Reagan, and religion in America. His numerous prizes include the Merle Curti Award of the American Historical Association, the National Book Critics Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and an honorary doctorate from the College of the Holy Cross.
all this confusion ...what a baffling absurd cosmic joke Christianity is.. I bet the real Jesus was just some possibly crazy preacher of the end times. THere were lots of those at the time in Israel.

So this guy thinks that God became a man and founded a church but didn't even let them get the canon right so forgeries crept in and caused centuries of sexism?

There's nothing unique about Paul's term "ecclesia". It's Greek for assembly which is the definition of a synagogue. What Wills fails to understand is the difference between the synagogue & the temple because he fails to account for the Jewish caste system. The synagogue was set up by the Herods to minister to lower caste Jews; specifically, Gentiles (Greek pagans forced into conversion by Hasmonean/Maccabe rule) who were not "blood" Jews & were thus prohibited from entering the temples.

@Prophets4Christ Uh, no kidding. However, what your getting at is not correct either...If Christ is the acorn, I'd be embarrassed if it was still trying to take root, as it was in the first century....What you see today is an organic and towering oak that has grown from that seed - guided by the Holy Spirit. Gary Wills claims to belong to that oak: The Catholic Church (he's just not very good at it.) Peace.

Perhaps it would help if you could explain Calvin's take on this contradiction because I don't think he ever adressed it.

@ObjectiveBob
The argument about the "contradiction" is old hat. Calvin already addressed it 500 years ago, as did Dabney 150 years ago. The problem with liberals is they only read new books; they don't think they need to read the old ones because of their conceit.

If you would read Wills's book you'd know that his argument is purely scholarly. Wills considers the particular passage of 1 Cor 14.34-35 an interpolation because it contradicts itself in the same document. Earlier in the letter to Corinth Paul allows women to speak: "a woman should not pray or prophesy with her head uncovered"

Criticizing this guy for not understanding St. Paul would be like criticizing me for not understanding Thor. In short, it's a moot point because it's all bullshit to begin with.
Good day.
