I remember loving this show when it came out (I was 12) and found the episodes online a few years ago. The show stars Jason Bateman as a scheming young man going up against his new neighbor who also happens to like his mom. In this first episode, you may recognize a very young River Phoenix in the opening scene.

Pilot

First aired: 9/26/1984

Imagine J.R. Ewing at the age of 14. That's Matthew Burton. Imagine Matthew Burton 20 years older. That's Norman Lamb. When Norman moves into the apartment across the hall and takes a shine to Mrs. Burton, Matthew moves into action with a fiendish opening gambit. Will it soon be checkmate, or has Matthew finally met his match?

Writer: Ron Leavitt, Michael G. Moye
Director: Peter Bonerz
Guest star: Adam Jay Sadowsky (Eli) , Beto Lovato (Manuel), River Phoenix (Brian)

  • The only time Jason Bateman was used properly and the parents flooded NBC with complaints that their kids were tryingtobe like Matt Burton on the show so the yanked it after 1 season.

This show was way ahead of it's time for sarcasim.

The writers went on and wrote for Married with Children.

  • I LOVED this show. So great to see it again! Thanks for posting.

  • Weird to know that "the adults" (David Garrison, Karen Caye) on this show were only in their early 30s at the time. Man they seemed SO OLD back then to me as a litte kid in the 80s. Today I'm in my mid 30s in 2011 and older then the parents on this series were back then!

  • @RadDacey No doubt this show was awesome. I tried to be Matthew Burton all through middle school. This show easily would have been huge in the 90s on Fox, especially since the writers of this show went on to write for Married w/ Children. Shows like Married and Simpsons were very similar to this show but could not have made it in the mid 80s where the kids insult parents and the moral of the story often has the kid still winning. This show was ahead of it's time.

  • Do you notice how the part in Bateman's hair changes. It goes from parted in the center to parted at the side. And when it's parted at the side, he looks a bit older and taller too. He must've had a growth spurt during the filming

  • 7:03 lolololol

  • Quite the alternative to Charles in Charge (type shows)! Just as MWC was quite the alternative to The Cosby Show. Ron Levitt (RIP) and Michael Moye were tv geniuses. They transmorphed the comedy genre as far as tv goes. Bateman's great. Garrison, too. Cool.

  • though there was a lot of crap on tv in 1984, this was one of the few great shows to come out that year (the other being miami vice). this show would have been a huge hit if fox existed back then, and jason bateman and tricia cast would've been the biggest stars on tv. too bad it didn't, because we would've had something different, which all 3 networks hated. nbc treated it like shit, and they wouldn't have even touched it if it didn't star bateman.

    i miss this show.

  • I bet this show plays 24/7 up in Heaven.

    Right?

  • totally forgot about this show! luv Jason Bateman. I was about 13 back then & never knew about the parent groups protesting, what must they be thinking about TV reality shows nowadays?? LOL

  • A great show! Love it.
