Ed Begley, Jr. better known as Dr. Victor Ehrlich on St. Elsewhere where good on this version of Pyramid, but he likes t say in the Main Game "and this is the thing" and plus, he and Teresa Ganzel as far as I'm concerned are still Good Friends to this day and this was a rematch from the last time and Ed did better than he did his 1st time when he went head to head w/the Sweetheart of Game Shows Teresa Ganzel and plus, Teresa did well, too.
This was discussed on the Invision board: Ed gave "A long rose" for "Things with a stem" and was accepted on this episode. On a later episode, however, when someone gave the same clue for the same category, he was buzzed.

Wonder if Ed was drinking his own urine at this point, or if that freak of nature started that later in life.

I recall that also - in fact I thought this was that episode, so when they took it I was shocked

I remembered the same thing.
The clue should have been accepted. The second time call could not have been more wrong.
They said it was leading illicitly into the answer. But, a long rose has a stem and is an excellent clue.
