Sometimes my brain works overtime when doing disaster research. Here are the 2009 disaster statistics for China:

http://english.cctv.com/20100113/102131.shtml

And, yes, I do read an atlas!

Jan 23, 1556 an earthquake in Shaanxi, China, kills an estimated 830,000 people.

August 9, 1878 a tornado hits Wallingford, CT, killing 34 people.

January 15, 1919, a tank of molasses bursts in Boston, MA, killing 21 people. I said January 19th, I apologize for the misinformation. I have so many dates in my head!

  • Yes, China is very good at handling natural disasters. But there are 2000+ coal miners died every year. And about 5000+ ppl die in traffic accidents every month.

  • @ilvtofku yes, I recall reading about the staggering number of coal mining accidents in China, and indeed, around the world. There was just a recent one in the news in West Virginia I believe. It's definitely one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

  • Good stuff John! I too get interested in useless knowledge and do read Atlases......great bathroom reading! I see you also enjoy a bargain, That looks like a Borders or Barnes & Noble clearance sticker on that atlas......I too have found some great books from those racks. LOL

  • @dacrocker I tell you what, derek, I love the bargain tables at my book store. $9.99 for that atlas, I felt like a thief. I'm used book sales favorite client too :)

  • I also read the atlas ;)

  • What an insane death toll, especially when you consider the world population at the time... building codes definitely make all the difference, although I dread the day the earthquake that no building could ever withstand strikes a major city.

  • Yeah, Google is the worst because you can go on and on forever!

  • Yeah, staggering statistics my friend.
