What an insane death toll, especially when you consider the world population at the time... building codes definitely make all the difference, although I dread the day the earthquake that no building could ever withstand strikes a major city.

Yes, China is very good at handling natural disasters. But there are 2000+ coal miners died every year. And about 5000+ ppl die in traffic accidents every month.

@ilvtofku yes, I recall reading about the staggering number of coal mining accidents in China, and indeed, around the world. There was just a recent one in the news in West Virginia I believe. It's definitely one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

Good stuff John! I too get interested in useless knowledge and do read Atlases......great bathroom reading! I see you also enjoy a bargain, That looks like a Borders or Barnes & Noble clearance sticker on that atlas......I too have found some great books from those racks. LOL

@dacrocker I tell you what, derek, I love the bargain tables at my book store. $9.99 for that atlas, I felt like a thief. I'm used book sales favorite client too :)
