OK , I have been bemoaning the fact that I rarely get any depth or pathos, light and shade into how I play. I just bash out a tune. Well I've put a wee bit of work into trying to learn to finger pick over the last couple of weeks and it's time to go public. Screwed up the last verse a wee bit - but posted regardless!

I chose my favourite Robert Burns song because it has the potential for more Pathos than you can shake a stick at. It is stunningly beautiful - and I don't think I totally destroyed it.

Listen to Eddi Reader doing this song - utterly spell binding. This is a poem from Burns to one of his many ladies - letting her down gently, saying good bye. The best versions of this song seem to be done by women - listen to Reader, Karen Mathieson or Fiona Kennedy - all stunning.

Me ? adequate for a first effort but no need for a contract folks .....well certainly not a commercial one ....but I bet a few of you know a man with a gun?

  • I am a man with several guns... and I would use them on anyone who tried to stop your playing... The fingerpicking is tough... it takes work... I know because I'm terrible at it... you did great Stu.. your hard on yourself like I am... we do this because we love it..... right?

  • Cheers Jimmy. I have a Burns poetry book I was awarded at school 'cos my class all sang Ye Banks and Braes. Music teacher played it like a dirge. Hated it . I still read the book though. I heard that Jackson rumour too - wonder if it's true?

  • Beautiful.

Until Burns day this year I had assumed it was "Aye" fond kiss as in "always".

I heard a rumour that Michael Jackson had recorded an album of Burns songs!

It's on the Guardian website if you google it.

Burns was my 1st inspiration...I have a wee certificate from 1978 for performing his poetry.
