I saw this on Monterey State Beach (Del Monte/ McMuffin beach we sometimes call it).I have never seen one of these before. Any idea what it was? It was in a little pool, just outside the surf zone, presumably made by kids building sand castles.

Mystery solved! It has been identified as an "Isopod", or "Kelp Shrimp".
Apparently quite common, and tasty! Wouldn't catch me eating one of 'em.
"They can be found near the surface on giant Kelp, you have to look close and be a good observer, as they cling to the kelp stalk ..."
