Anyone who doesn't understand why you'd sharpen a shovel has never tried to dig a hole for something and hit a large, tough root in the ground. Trust me, a sharpened shovel comes in handy when that happens.

Well I have been gardening for 55 yrs and have nevere needed to grind a edge on my shovel those who dont agree dont do much digging as with regard to nicks caused by stone just beat the nick out with a hammer and then carry on digging

@powerspade not exactly, when "digging" large gravel and mud mix; nics are a pain

All I can say is that you dont do much digging

Less resistance going in and cutting through roots And no dirt doesn't sharpen anything.

Why sharpen a shovel ? the best way to put a good edge on it is to use it after a couple of minutes use the dirt will sharpen it for you without having to grind a edge on it
