No you don't need to encode the podcasts, cuz the Zens have a special thing called the Zencast which carries almost all podcasts. Learns up

mine plays mp4, mov and mv4 without encoding...maybe u need to fuck around with the settings

Better than the zune and ipod.
But it doesnt support aac mv4 mp4 mov
So if you like video podcasts you must encode them into wmv.
