Response from Wendy regarding the new environment (see comments section):
Newly zinced wire is toxic to any living being. However, after it has been left outside in the weather for a while and then hosed down apparently the problem is lessened by a huge degree. When birds are in huge flights like ours, with lot of other birds and lots of things to do, they do not sit on the wire and spend their days chewing at it to escape. In fact the only time they come to the wire is when people call them over and want to pet them. I have been using this wire for 20 years and have never had a problem with heavy metal poisoning.
I have no doubt that fluorescent lighting is not good for the birds. I don't think it is good for people either. Unfortunately there is very little choice - dark or light. Vet's and others heavily involved in the care of parrots recommend special lights to attach to cages. These lights are to provide 'natural' light spectrum and create the availabilty of UV rays so that birds can metabolize vitamins A and D from their food. They are fluorescent lights. Needless to say the best light is in their countries of origin.
If only we had year around sunshine and warmth here in Canada.
That's a real bird paradise! Awesome!
But I have two questions based on what i read about birds and I'm unsure about:
Isn't that zinced mesh toxic for birds?
Isn't fluorescent lighting unpleasant for the birds. These birds are able to see up to 100 pictures per second, humans only about 25. That's why birds may expirience fluorescent lighting as a disturbing flickering lighting.
