Welcome to my mid-life crisis. 56 days ago I woke up and decided I had to have a drum set. And boy is it fun, although lately work and a weekend in the mountains have been slowing me down a bit.

I don't expect anyone to understand why I picked this song. But I have always thought it had a great drum/bass combo ever since my sister and I first saw it on Friday Night Videos back in 1984 when videos were only on late on Friday nights (MTV had started, but not many people had cable). Anyway, not so keen on the spandex that also went along with the song, but the rhythm stuck with me.

Since nobody on youtube appears to have covered this song before, and I couldn't find any drum tabs of it, I started to pick it apart by ear. I rapidly became confused, so I went at looked at the old video (youtube search it, it's there amazingly). It then became obvious, from the parts where you can see the drummer, that there is an overlay for the tom fills. He played the "theme" all the way through and then the fills were overlaid. So, having already started to learn it that way, what I have done is, within reason, tried to replicate the two tracks on one. This basically amounts to trying to keep a lot of the snare hits along with the fills. I didn't go overboard with this, and dropped a few where it was too difficult, but it was a fun exercise.

I also had fun with tuning the drum set, and hope I have succeeded in getting an outrageous 80s electronic tom sound. I am less happy with the kick drum, but there you have it. You will notice, if you have been following this saga, that my hi-hat has turned white. This was a practice run, and not supposed to be the video I posted until it went OK. The white is a cloth bag that I stuck on the hi-hat to stop the rubber from getting chewed up. Oh well. No one ever accused me of being fashionable.

Anyway, a pretty close approximation of the original, I think. Aside from a few differences due to the original tom overdubs, I think I only missed one kick (forgot near the beginning), one floor tom (hit the rim near the end so it didn't sound hardly at all), and maybe a hi-hat or two. I think I also started the mammoth tom roll in the guitar solo two toms to early, but I kinda like how it sounds like that. I think my timing is improving -- a bit off, but not too bad overall for a still-relative newbie.

The set is a Roland TD-4KX (I know, I know, but I live in an apartment). The sound is mixed on Sonar 8 Producer's Edition (EQ-ing the kick and hi-hat on the original track down) via Soundblaster sound card input, and then added to video from my cheap digital Sony camera with Windows Movie Maker. The sync is not too bad on my computer, but it always seems to get screwed up when I upload. Let's see if it happens this time too.....

Hope you enjoy this blast from the past! Or at least get a good laugh!

  • Good job... And you picked a great song!

  • @Sagiquarium Thanks for the comment. A very under-rated tune, in my opinion! What a great groove!

  • Not bad for beginner....that right stick no need to go so high

  • @jerseymafia1923 Thanks very much for your comment and encouragement. You are not the fist to comment on the high right hand! See my reply to theDJJOR's comment that explains what happened there. Thanks again!

  • its good but you dont bring the right stick that high! :-P

  • @theDJJOR Thanks for the comment! I have looked at my videos, and you are quite right, on this one I AM bringing the hi-hat stick way high. I think I know why. For me, 8th notes on the hi-hat are the standard. In this song, it's quarter notes, so I am counting on the down and then again on the up. That way my right foot doesn't get confused. Maybe ugly, but it works! See me video of No One Like You where I am doing both at different times and you will see what I mean. Thanks again!

  • That was pretty solid. Especially for only playing for a couple months. One thing you could try later on is to not follow the track so much and improv a little more, but only time will help with that.

    Check out my videos.

  • Simply LOVED the 80's! :D
