Depending on what quality parts you want the cost varies.I just did my 03' protege like this engine and it cost me over $400 for parts.I used a Gates Kit from NAPA and a new(not rebuilt) water pump. Also, ended up buying new plastic tming cover set made by Dorman for $80..from NAPA.Seems the palstic gets brittle around the bolt holes and breaks.Junk yard had acouple, but they were broke also. Not a terrible job, but time consuming for a first timer like me.
I watched your video and it was a help on my protege, but you should of explained htat you need a tool that holdds the cam sprockets in place.I struggled keeping it in time since there was nothing holding the cams in place and they wanted to go over TDC when putting the belt on.Can't believe you guys did this job without a tool or wedge to hold the cams. It's not as weasy as it looks.you don't show how to set the timing to the right spot either.

i install a cilinder head on my mazda 626 1999 2.0 and i align the marks like on the video but the car wont start is fuel ,spark, compresion but the car wont start.the reason i changue the cilinder head was because i over heat the engine.has a new head now.
why does all the videos about changing timing belt, skip right over how to properly tension the belt? that is one of the most crucial part of the whole change out
Wow this is a lot more work than shown in the video, easy for a mechanic with proper tools. My 626 needs this but it's so expensive, I'm just going to drive it till it snaps. Doesn't make sense to spend 50% car's value on maintenance or repairs. Looks like too much for me unless I had a friend who could help.
tnx !!!!!

@shahram72 If you learn it yourself like the video is intending, then it costs about $150 in parts.
