In todays Market Report South Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics reorganized itself into two major groups—one group, its chip and display units; and the other, a combination of its telecom and media businesses. Samsung, the world's biggest maker of memory chips and LCD screens, is struggling as chronic oversupply and falling consumer demand has wiped out profits.
Hitachi, Japan's biggest electronics maker, has been hurt by a sharp decline in microchip sales, and is facing an annual loss of more than a billion dollars. Hitachi is also suffering from sluggish sales in its flat-panel TVs and other electronics as consumers hold off on off big-ticket purchases.
An in Hong Kong, HSBC shares tanked after a second broker downgrade this week.
