Stagolee (as in the better know 50's hit?) If so I'd like to hear the "talking blues" version that gave birth to it . Are we talking a song about Lee Slenton (spelling?) if so link me to the "rap" original you speak of. Does the "song" sound the same or is the 50's hit just based on the man, the story? Hard times the song remain intact pretty much since 1854 and that's an amazing thing. Although Springsteen cocks it up pretty good. I'd like a good history lesson from you please. Thanks

the rap precursors are consider people and groups like Blind Willie Johnson, Pine Top Smith, Memphis Jug Band, Butterbeans and Susie, Seven Foot Dilly & his Dill Pickles, Dixieland Jug Blowers, Jimmie Davis, Blind Willie McTell. I tell anyone here to give that stuff a listen and see for themselves that it is a real big jump of the imagination to see them very closely related to rap. I pretty much hear "music" when I listen to those people.
