I uploaded this to post at http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/aquariumforum/ to document the progress of the tank. Comments are welcome. For those of you who aren't aware, both these fish can grow to 6" in length, and be quite tall as well. This is why there aren't more fish in the tank. Tyrol, my pleco (commonly known as an algae eater), will get too big for the tank so I will have to find him a home when I can.

  • At the time, about 4 months. I gave Tyrol away because he got too big and was producing way too much waste for me to keep up with... but it was after he poisoned Caprica who died from fin rot while I was on vacation and my family didn't notice her fins. So right now I only have Caprica in there and he's about a year old. He didn't have a very healthy fish-childhood either so I would only expect him to live 3-4 years unfortunately.

  • *I meant I only have Gaius in there now

  • why not a koi in there too?

  • @thecrazypetkid16

Because the tank is overstocked as it is. Goldfish produce a lot of waste which will kill the fish or stunt their development in this tank size. The waste constantly gives off ammonia which is extremely toxic to fish.

Koi can also easily reach 24 inches in length, so this tank is about half the size you would need to house even one koi.

I'll send you a website which helps you calculate how many fish you can have in your tank.

    Good luck!

  • the tank is not overstocked at all you could actually put like 10 goldfish in there and they wont die

Won't die in how long? The lifespan of a fancy goldfish is 10-15 years. I guarantee you they would die before then. 10 goldfish in here would be overstocked on a magnitude of about 8 too many fish. Try using something like aqadvisor(dot)com for stocking because you don't seem to have any clue on how many fish can fit in a tank and not get poisoned.

  • What are the name(s) of those plants you got? Honestly I believe its is possible to have more fish in your tank if you get some good filters but thats just my opinion

  • Your aquarium and fish are beautiful! Yes, that's a good size for them. How do you find using sand as a substrate btw? Is it hard to clean? I think sand is much more aesthetically pleasing than gravel, but I've heard it's a nightmare to clean up.

  • im talking about the amount of fish you could hold in there without them all dying, cause you could put like 10 goldfish in there and they wont die or get sick ok, i wasnt talking about how long they live at all, and how old are your goldfish

  • koi are for ponds not tanks

  • how do you keep your plants alive , gold fish are glutinous bastards ?

  • can plecos live in cold water?
