This is a short demo video about the Society for Creative Anachronism. It should give you an overview of the Society and and how to get more information. If you're from the Dallas/Fort Worth area, you're really in luck since contact info right in the video.

  • Project,

I sincerely regret you have had such a poor experience in the Outlands, as I have never had anything but a wonderful time when I have visited the outlands. I, however, stand by what I said in the video. In my Barony and in the Kingdom of Gleann Abhann - groups do still have loaner gear, and we encourage people to get to whatever event they can manage whether it be a fighter practice, an A&S night or an event. I think this is a pretty cool video and I am honored to be in it

    Charles

  • @chasfburk Thank you, Your Excellency.

  • Humorous video, though not factual to the SCA. The lending of garb to newcomers at their first events, stopped being practiced fifteen years ago. Most groups request that you do NOT attend events, but instead try to attend meetings if you can get in touch with the organizers. New people to the SCA are requested to get in contact with others to find their garb before attending, and they do not sell garb at events in most areas any longer.

  • Actually, it is factual. My group DOES still have a Gold Key and we DO ask people to come to an event right off, assuming one is nearby in the near future. Being the Texas kingdom, there can be a lot of driving involved in a "local" event. What kingdom are you from? Sounds kinda . . . not cool.

  • Most nifty video, but unless I'm mistaken, Sir Asad is of the Outlands, although it would be an honor to have him here as a resident of Gleann Abahnn.

  • Oops. Missed that detail.

  • @chrisbfisher I agree. I went to an Ansteorra event once and I was offered a tunic so I could go in garb. If we know someone's going that doesn't have garb, we try to supply them with something from a group stash or we find someone with extra garb. The only reason I'll take newcomers to meetings is to give them an opportunity to meet with the local group and hear stories; I'd prefer to introduce them to events first so they don't think the monthly meeting setting is the bulk of what we do.

  • Very Well done Video. I used to live in Gleann Abhann. I was there when they were made their own Kingdom. But regretefully I was not at the event. Mundane life snuck up on my then. Huzzah to all SCA MEMBERS.

  • Great video. One (gentle) criticism, though. Title stacking (Baron Master, Baron Sir, etc) is not proper. They are either Baron So-and-so or Sir Such-and-such. Royal and military title stacking is proper as in the case of General Lord Cornwallis. Otherwise, I'd have to refer to certain folks here as Baroness Baroness Mistress Mistres Duchess [Name].

  • Hey, at what point do I get to say I'm an SCA viral video star :-)... Do you think you will be editing a second one that is a bit less kingdom specific that could be used in multiple kingdoms?

  • Please try to influence the Kingdom of the Outlands to change their ways. I grew up in the Kingdom of An Tir and always had fun as a child before I moved out to the Outlands. I don't know why the Kingdom out here is so dedicated to ruining the fun that the SCA is, but if more people mention it, and other Kingdom's royalty hear of it, maybe the Outlands can be pressured to change, and become a decent and humane Kingdom to participate in.

  • I'm in the Kingdom of the Outlands, sadly. Poorly planned and executed events, newcomers who will leave in tears and never return, and very little organization. The SCA has a really bad rep out here, and they earned it, sadly.

  • I have to agree with chrisbfisher here- I've lived and played in several kingdoms, and mostly where I'd have to know this informaion. Everywhere I've been it's been this way. Where are you at?

  • Well I think it is just AWESOME video of our King and Queen here in our wonderful kingdom. Vivat
