Hey, nice performance. I have that book too and I love it. Seems like the music pieces are nicer than other method books which can be stale. BTW, those pants you're wearing... are you a chef?

Hey, I saw a subway busker playing this song today. Lol, I wish I could paid to play this...

@jgates2944 Hi, thanks! I look forward to seeing a video but please take your time and do not put yourself out. I am still working through the last parts of Book 1. I hope to start Book 2 sometime in February. To answer your question, I do understand the rhythm notation but I can't hear it in my head. It takes a long time to learn without an audio example and a nagging doubt that I don't have it "right" persists much longer, darn perfectionism...

@jgates2944 I guess a metronome is probably the best way in the end. Last week I started a spreadsheet of 3 columns; Exercise #, Date, BPM to record my progress in beats per Minute. I have also purchased a fun book called "The Complete Acoustic Guitar Method" by David Hamburger that covers a lot of basic strumming and picking. Thanks for your video and for your response. It is interesting to discuss the learning process.
Hi, nice performance. It is nice to see someone going through the same learning path. I know everyone is different but I am working through this book right now - nearly at the end of book 1 - and I was wondering if you would say how long you worked with each of Book 1, Book2, etc? Did you use any other methods previously or at the same time? How did you practice the chord and rhythm exercises which are not on the CD?

Thank you for the comment and questions. I would say it took me close to 7 months on each book to get a full understanding of the book. I would practice with a metronome, and understand the timing of each piece of music. I would then rember the letter names of each note and say them aloud as I played them. I did not use any other guitar books other than hal leonard. toward the end of book 2 classical guitar technique music theory and scales Aaron Shearer supplement 2 and 3.

To understand the chord timing understand in 4/4 time there are 4 beats to a measure. you can play 1a2a3a4a or 1234 etc etc just realize to have the struming to be in time on the main beats 1234 and improvise on strum technique but not timing. I have been going to private lessons which is helpful and I would recomend it if possible. I could maybe help if you want from time to time. you can also buy a guitar looping effect so you can play both parts as well.

@jgates2944 Hi, My first reply to this comment did not post. I want to thank you for the offer of help. It is very kind. I think what would help (and it might get quite a few views from people using this book series) is a recording of some of the trickier chord rhythms which are not on the CD. For example exercises 25-27 in book 2 - Especially exercise 27 with the palm muting. I was going to try to enter them into the excellent free Tuxguitar program but seeing them played would be even easier.

my first question is do you understand the timing. in exercise 25 1 2 3 a 4 a 1 2 3a 4a played twice. I plan on posting a video to help you. exercise 26 will have to show in video 1a 2a 3 4 first measure on the a's rest and on the 3rd beat rest play beat 1 the & of beat 2 and rest on beat 3 play beat 4 work on that if you don't already have it down I should have something posted quick. hopefully that helps.

how long did it take you to get to that point in the book?

@hererocketman
I was able to play along with the cd in about 7 months but it took me about 1 year and a half to have a full understanding of it and be able to play it and sight read it without the book. Hal leonard has three books I am on the third one now and it has been close to 2 yrs now. any other questions I would be happy to answer and help you out. Are you just starting guitar?
