Genesis started life as a progressive rock band, in the manner of Yes and King Crimson, before a series of membership changes brought about a transformation in their sound, into one of the most successful pop/rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s. In addition, the group has provided a launching pad for the superstardom of members Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, and star solo careers for members Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Steve Hackett. Their roots go back to 1965 and a pair of rival groups, the Garden Wall and the Anon, formed by students at the Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey. They merged, with the result that 15-year-olds Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Michael Rutherford joined with 14-year-old Anthony Phillips, calling themselves the New Anon and recording a six-song demo featuring songs primarily written by Rutherford and Phillips.

He dives down into the cold water. At first he is thrown onto the rocks, and pulled under the water by a fast moving channel, which takes him right past John, down river.

Moving down the water
John is drifting out of sight,
Its only at the turning point
That you find out how you fight.

In the cold, feel the cold
all around
And the rush of crashing water
Surrounds me with its sound.

Rael manages to grab a rock, pull himself to the surface and catch his breath. As John is carried past, Rael throws himself in again and catches hold of his arm. He knocks John unconscious and then locking themselves together, he rides the rapids into the slow running water, where he can swim to safety.

Striking out to reach you
I can't get through to the other side,
When you're racing in the rapids
There's only one way, thats to ride.

Taken down, taken down
by the undertow
I'm spiralled down the river bed,
My fire is burning low.
Catching hold of a rock that's firm,
I'm waiting for John to be carried past.
We hold together, hold together and shoot the rapids fast.

But as he hauls his brother's limp body onto the bank he lies him out and looks hopefully into his eyes for a sign of life. He staggers back in recoil, for staring at him with eyes wide open is not John's face - but his own.

And when the waters slow down
The dark and the deep
have no-one, no-one, no-one, no-one
no-one left to keep.
Hang on John! We're out of this at last.
Somethings changed, that's not your face.
It's mine - it's mine!

  • Gabriel's voice is probably the best I've ever heard.

I saw the main Genesis cover band, The Musical Box, do this album a few months ago, and it was spectacular. But of course, you cannot get any better than the group that created this masterpiece of an album.

  • first time i listened to this song, i was NOT expecting the ending

    pretty big WTF moment

  • no se dice EXELENTE. se dice EXCELENTE. a ver si ,haciendo GRANDES palabras, por lo menos las sabeis escribir

  • I remember I had to turn it up to be able to hear it properly...worn out album...bad record player.

  • The depth of emotion in this song (and album) is scary, I completely agree with you skipper6803..

  • I wore this album out ! My friends couldn't understand why I love Genesis so much. Some people get it and some never will.

We get it ! All the songs were great on the Lamb, but this one really moves me like no other. Thanks for posting it !

  • Saw Genesis perform this album tour at Grand Valley State University in 1977 with the only understanding that this group's sound was somewhere between David Bowie and Yes. Man, what a show!
