If I take 6 million six-sided dice and roll them all at once and end up with some result, someone could state that the probability of rolling that exact combination is some arbitrarily high number. But the roll is not significant in any way because there is no predetermined pattern that we are trying to roll for.

So the fact that the Universal constants were "rolled" in such a way as to make life feasible is only significant if we assume that the Universe intended to get that result.

heh yeah, I kinda like the elastic band theory after all, we just knwo what they are nowe, we don't know what would happen if they were changed of if they could be, sort of like with chemical reactions, you will get same results of the end product no matter what propotions of the chemicals you add, you might get more left over of the rest. *if the chemical solution isn't a kind where the left over stuff react badly :>*

There was a study done (can't remember it atm - and Im in a rush so can't search for it) which showed that if the universe was created by rolling dice 30% of all rolls would create a universe capable of creating/housing stars (and therefore the elements). I believe also that taking out the nuclear weak force would render a similar outcome.

Well there is the theory on the dice roll that I wonder about and others have voiced this too, who is to say that the dice can be rolled differently? Or they arn't connected in such a way that while you can get different dice rolls each time, the constants are so connected in intertwined that changing one constant changes all the others so we end up with a simular end result.

The fine tuning argument fails if you simply examine ALL the other areas of the examinable universe. So far as we know, Earth is the only place we can survive w/o artificial help. I think CDK007 did a vid showing that it's like 99.999999999999999999999999999­999999999999999999999999999999­999999999999999999999999999999­% NOT fine tuned.

And yet, if you throw enough stars and planets out, life on one is NOT improbable but actually probable due to sheer #s of throws of the dice.

another argument could be that there are many many different combinations of dice rolls that could foster a life supporting universe. Our one is not so special in that it is a very large number of wins- there could've been a large number of losses- it is exceedingly unlikely that our universe is the one that was created, but some universe did have to be created, and ours is as likely as any of the others. Of course i don't believe in dice rolls doing anything as a determinist lol.

The fine tuning argument is ridiculous and sad, and I don't understand why scientists/philosophers give it the time of day. There may be an infinite number of types of phenomenon that are made impossible by the physical constants of this universe, what makes the phenomenon of life so important? The opinion of a living organism? Absurd.

The question one has to ask is "Why is winning the lottery every day for 100 years significant?" The answer is obviously because it would be nice for a human to have that much money. But if you abstract the argument, the random numbers being selected are objectively meaningless and without value. No different than any other string of random numbers. Life as a phenomenon is no more important, objectively, than any other phenomenon.

Any lottery winner: "The dice were rolled exactly for me!" True enough, but with the specific player in mind? Unlikely.

So far the universe has been rolled once. Gee, I hope we're not "snake eyes".
