Season 18 Episode 582 First aired on CBS 1/29/1973
Matt Dillon rides wearily into Dodge City after thirty-six hours in the saddle. At the office he can't get to sleep because Festus is so exuberant about everything. In the course

of the day Matt fights with a prisoner and is stabbed with a fork. Kitty will not talk to him because duty caused him to miss a picnic. There is a brawl in the Longbranch Saloon.

A young boy locks a crotchety old woman in a safe that has no available combination. Finally, Matt takes things into his own hands.

  • Does anyone have a clip on Festus argue with Doc about a lot of land and how to buy it or something like that

    thx bill

  • festus what a bone head even a catfish should have out smarted him.

  • @corkymcgurk Yes, that's one of Wayne's most famous scenes. He also punched James Garner for real (according to Garner's Archive of American Television interview) in a fight scene for the first episode of "Maverick." It's on youtube and fascinatingly realistic, a sequence in a hotel room. He played a pretty scary Dillinger in "Baby Face Nelson" opposite Mickey Rooney that same year (1957). The guards at San Quentin were wary of him when he returned there to shoot a movie w/ Siegal.

  • @Onlymusical yeah he was a good actor. Do you remember him in McClintock with John Wayne---and he says to Gordon Pilgrim " I know, I know. I'm gonna use good judgement. I haven't lost my temper in forty years, but pilgrim you caused a lot of trouble this morning, might have got somebody killed... and somebody oughta belt you in the mouth. But I won't, I won't. The *hell* I won't! " and he belts him in the mouth and that big fight ensues and many fall into a claypit filled water!

  • One of the funniest bits ever on the show! Why did Festus wear those noisy spurs. cowboys usually wore them when working on horses.

  • Omg the funniest thing I've ever seen!

    "FESTUUUUUUUS!!!!!!!"

  • I like this episode. The actor Dillon arrested is Leo Gordon, a legendarily frightening ex-prisoner at San Quentin who also wrote scripts. Don Siegal said he was the scariest man he ever met.
