  • says somebody who's never played derby and obviously knows nothing about it.

you've apparently never had the pleasure of seeing modern Roller Derby

    that aside...

the no pads thing is crazy. but then again, modern roller derby is way more agressive than this. and what's with this you get knocked down the jam is over stuff? eff that, 3 second recovery b*tch! lol

  • I've seen videos of the amatuer girl's leagues. I skated derby myself and I can say without a doubt, if we were able to get these women as they are in the video and have them play against the flat track girls, they would wipe today's girls out with no problem. Thosw were tough women and extremely well trained atheletes back then.

  • @DerbyHurts actually there has been scripted/pro wrestling style roller derby in the past, (mainly 70s-90's). the "Rollergames" league was super gimmicky.

  • @RosadaDelanoProfundo Please play derby before you deem what is real and what is not. I'm nearly forty and have been playing for over a year, now. Every block, every jam, every injury is real. I've had separated ribs, a torn PCL, and 30cc of blood trapped on my knee. I've watched friends tear ligaments, and break bones. There's nothing fake or pro-wrestling about it. There are 40 pages of rules to follow, and it is a game of strategy, not hair-pulling stupidity. Play before you judge.

  • Are there four jammers? Why are they all skating in a line rather than a pack?

  • Could Pro Wrestling have been thought up after this?

"Midge Brasuhn and Gerry Murray are two names that are inexorably linked in Roller Derby history....Toughie and Gerry built it and kept it going. They are who the fans came to see night after night. They built their reputations and that of Roller Derby with their fierce competition and their loyalty to the game....As rivals and competitors, they set the bar for all who would follow." I ask you, who in modern Roller Derby are the fans coming out to see night after night?

Modern derby looks like it's in slow motion not because it is, but because its skated on a flat track most of the time. The banked track gives you the momentum you need to skate fast, and when you skated high on the straight-aways and skate low into the curves, then go back up high on the opposite side straight-away using the 5-stride method you had the track working for you, not against you. Gals from yesteryear just knew how to skate, Period! Gals today don't or are scared to.

  • You guys have to realize, 90% of todays roller derby, which by the way, means women only...is on a flat track and the agression is nothing more than pro wrestling on wheels. There was a time it was real, but in the lates 50's it started getting more and more phony. And the few (like one or two) so called leagues that do exist with men and female skaters are ran by one or two people and again, its old roller games. If it doesn't have men and women and a banked track, its not roller derby.

  • this is some great footage!!! so fun to see where our modern day roller derby got its start!! old school vs new??? no comparison!!! we would have no new if there was no old and we wouldn't be watching the video at all if there was no new!!!! Love the video thanks for sharing!!!

  • This is actually really cool... Today's rollerderby is all like 2mph
