Family Instinct - trailer of the film

Family Instinct is Latvian director's Andris Gauja film about incest, an illegal, social taboo that is also contrary to a religious norm. Zanda (28) is a young woman, prematurely aged by the rigors of hard manual labor. Surrounded by poverty and hopelessness, she is trying to survive with her two children in a god-forsaken Latvian village. Her hardships can be traced back to living in an incest relationship with her brother, Valdis. When Valdis is put in jail, local society makes her to choose: whether she stays with him or with children. Despite her ill fortune, she manages to express her love for her children and is still hoping to save her family. The film offers a tragi-comic but highly authentic look at the bleak reality of today's Latvian countryside.

Ko jūs visi ņematies par to, "kādu priekšstatu filma radīs par Latviju"? Filma nav par valsti, tā ir par cilvēkiem un viņu savstarpējām attiecībām. Un šādas attiecības diemžēl ir izplatītas visā pasaulē. Ja šī būtu Vācijā veidota filma, jūs arī teiktu "fui kādi tie vacieši, visa nācija viens ar otru šitā te"?

Jāpriecājas vismaz, ka bērni viņiem fiziski normāli, jo parasti tādās situācijās dzimst kropli mazuļi.

Yes and no. This is not really typical look at Latvian countryside, it's more like typical uneducated alcoholics who wait when government will give them job, fortune and happiness, till then.. let's drink, fight, f***k, and blame everyone else for bad life quality.

Probably Latvia is not the only country with such people.
