The border between Canada and the USA separates Derby Line, Vermont from Stanstead, Québec.

On My way back to New York I stopped a couple of hours.

The border line separates 2 communities and sometimes runs across homes, libraries, stores.

In the past few years the border controls have became stricter and somehow creates a surreal situation for people that just live one street away from each other.

the border might just seem a painted line easy to cross, but there are cameras and sensors everywhere, You can't cross without reporting even if you have been living there for 80 years.

  • I drove to Derby Line/Stanstead on my way back to NY [ via Canada] from a wedding in Michigan.

At the border the agent took and threw in the garbage a lavender potted plant I was given at the wedding. You can't even take plants from Canada to the USA. The irony is that it was an American plant. So many regulations. Anyway people that have bad intentions always have the resources to get around.

  • So before this secure border initiative, old lady Krenshaw that lives on the Canadian side all by her lonely self with no family, gets invited by the Jones's for Easter supper across the street on the American side for the past 20 yrs. because they have sympathy and compassion for her. I guess now they better detain her and confiscate those cat treats she's bringing with her for the Jones's kitty that she just adores.

  • I went to Stanstead/Derby line, I went to a local road and had a photo taken of me straddling the border, there was nobody about and went back to Canada, the side I was on, in the next road 3 yes THREE cars came shooting round and accused me of an illegal entry, etc etc and threatened to arrest me but as I was on the Canadian side they couldn't touch me.

this was a complete over reaction, its not like Mexico, it must have been a quiet day, interesting town nevertheless including the library.

  • 0:15 ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT! SHOOT HIM!

  • @AdvenXer That guy was my neighbor and had some weird political views. He also thought the government was out to get him. He got a gas leak at his apartment and called it an assassination attempt >_> Hell.

  • "Things will change with Obama, I really do, I hope so. I'm gonna vote for him"

LOL, since being elected, Obama has made the border even stricter! Oh well.

  • Cameras and sensors everywhere? So, I guess every move the citizens of these 2 quaint towns make, is watched by a bureaucratic big brother. How sad for the people who live here.

European countries have become borderless since the fall of the Berlin Wall and Communism ... and we in Canada and the USA have gone "backwards: and have stricter borders everywhere now. What a shame.

  • The way the border patrol patrols this town reminds me of how the TSA treats air passengers today:

Treat everyone like they're a criminal, even if they don't exhibit behavior patterns that indicate they are intending to commit a crime.

  • @vespaUK125 i see nothing wrong with straddling the US canada border especially if you're in a place like that, most people arent doing anything wrong... The ones that are doing illegal activity let them get caught themselves... this is shameful that they treat this place like mexico... Mexico is far different and must be treated different

  • i cross often and don't get hassled but in a situation like derby like I think it's absurd that the border patrol are harassing people, makes me sick

  • So the Border Patrol can't tell that it's just some one doing nothing and going about there daily life in that town? How hard is it to tell that it's some one just crossing the street to have supper at a friend's place? It isn't.
