This one surprised me greatly. It seems Beethoven himself wrote an arrangement on this Swedish lullaby. The melody is an age old Swedish traditional folk song, and the lyrics, which are kept intact in Beethoven's interpretation, were written sometime during the late 18th century by Swedish poet Carl Michael Bellman.
Enjoy!
Also, this can be seen as a tribute to Elina Järventaus, or Elolinona, probably the best folk singer here on YouTube. Good riddance! :)
@MarKandification Damn straight!
I do sing it for my son, though, just because of the beautiful lyrics.

@dogofman Wiki/Internet can be your friend, he wrote the lyrics to his son Elis who died in smallpox, its a memorial to his son, roughly translated it would say " Little Charles, sleep sweat in peace". It is not a "common" lullaby, the song is old as Scandinavia, he just put new lyrics to it.

As best you live you shall die.
Roughly the from the Swedish lullaby here.
Really nice thing to sing to you're children to make them fall asleep, don't you think?
They really must have felt so much secure once they understood the text line there. The kids.
Religion does poison everything. It's not an exaggeration at all.

The intro kinda sound like it would fit in a Tim Burton movie :)

Well, Beethoven was commissioned to write arrangemens of dozens of folksongs - by adding piano accompaniment (sometimes with a violin and cello too) it made them 'marketable' so the publisher could bring out sets for the Viennese etc. to use in their homes, with the publisher paying Beethoven a royalty for arranging them. I've got the complete works, and there are large sets of Irish and Scottish ones, and many miscellaneous, such as English and, of course, Swedish! Presumably this is one.

I see this in your info section:
"Also, this can be seen as a tribute to Elina Järventaus, or Elolinona, probably the best folk singer here on YouTube."
I'm also a great fan of her besides Carl Michael Bellman!
I didn' know that Beethoven had made an arrangement on Bellman's song! Wow!

Hehe no! Bellman wrote the lyrics for this version of an old traditional song.
There is versions of it all over northern europe.

"Elis dog redan 1787, när Karl var nyfödd. Det gav bakgrunden till Bellmans bekanta vaggvisa Lille Charles sov sött i frid till sonen Karl den 8 augusti 1787, som fortfarande (!) sjungs i olika folkliga varianter."
