@burpo He doesn't mean it sounds the same. He means it produces the same 'up front' consistency he's looking for, but with less 'artifacts' than a single compressor.

The reason it sounds less squashed, yet still punchy, is all in the timing mechanisms involved with 2 compressors as opposed to one. Having two compressors means that when the level of the audio reaches the threshold it engages both compressors, meaning the ratio is essentially squared, so a 3:1 ratio on both compressors acts like a single 9:1 ratio. However it takes longer to engage so it's smoother. Then compressors disengage separately, allowing a smoother return to normal volume.
