I'm going to put out a challenge... to everyone reading this, go through the discography of every single one of your favorite bands and then, compare 'em to BOC's discography.
And then, please find me one band with a more impressive collection of albums in a 15-16 year span career than BOC.
Yes, this effectively boots out bands like Aerosmith, who went completely south after 'Rock in Hard Place' in '82. Or bands trying to continually rehash the same CDs, for numerous decades.

@kngrtk Everytime I have to answer one of your excellent points, I get to hear this excellent song! :)
-
@kngrtk It's OK by me!

@TOMHYLE88 'cheapen this discussion', Bingo, I concur. I was going to use Floyd but they didn't breakup w/ 79's 'The Wall'. Instead, 'Final Cut', then Water-less 'Lapse', weakened their near perfect legacy, even by mainstream standards. Same goes for the Who's 'Face Dances'.
BOC, on the other hand, savored their Magnus Opus for the very end, and thus, have achieved what other greats haven't. Is it ok if I compare 'em to Rock's Mozart?

@kngrtk and let me second you very much so; not just first rate in terms of music, and not just far batter live, as only truly inspired bluse musicians in love with their art together can be, but conceptually....If the BOC pushed and ideology among their crypto-mythich references and tales of often criminal insanity, it may be a little beyond my little brain what it is, but they certainly have not been affraid to explore, in any way shape or form, and for many years have welcomed us along! BOC!

@kngrtk Please dont cheapen this discussion with the Beatles.

@TOMHYLE88 I'd say that they did best DP/Sabbath because both early 70s juggernauts blew their creative wad in a short time (<76) and then, became shells of that former self. BOC went at it, full throttle, till 'Imaginos' and then, walked off into the sunset, 14 CDs in 15-16 years. That's rather Beatles-like, with 'Imaginos', as a type of concept/orchestral 'Abbey Road' send off. They're quite possibly the greatest band of all time.
-
@kngrtk Well, I don't know that they outshine Deep Purple or Black Sabbath, but yeah, they were as good as anyone for a long long time, and so incredibly original. To tell you the truth I think is is (briefly) that pedestrian minds finds extraordinary art and ideas frightening. Blue Oyster Cult New York Boogie All Night Long Forever!!!!!

The thing with Blue Oyster Cult is that they are much like The Who's rock orchestra! They don't make song's, Blue Oyster Cult constructs symphonies of marvelous melodies and riffs. Although they are not appreciated by many, there fans are among the most hardcore fans out there! That is why BOC is considered a one hit wonder. They made "one song that was popular" (by the masses) but there other song's are quality and beauty!

The inherent problems with BOC are that rockers hate rock critics, and numerous members of BOC have been Rock Critics! Not to mention the fact that metalheads are supposed to hate punks and BOC's own Patti Smith is the Princess of the Punks! Oh and hard rockers are serious & generally dislike humor in music, which BOC deals out in spades! PS:For further study, see the ultrabrilliant video of Blotto's "Metalhead", co-starring Buck Dharma as "the rock star"! [watch?v=aKqMEjsWYmQ] -- 1b2s
I loved this song. Imaginos is really a forgotten album...even people who like BOC give me a blank stare when I mention it. Oh well...their loss :(
