This is part one of an interview I did with my grandfather, J.B. Bowman, on November 27, 1993. He was a Pathfinder in the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. Every man and woman who served in World War II was special, but, as one 82nd Airborne veteran of World War II once told me, the Pathfinders were even more special.
The memories my grandfather shared in this recording about his experiences during the war are a valuable part of historical record. Indeed, the memories of every soldier, regardless of rank, military branch, or theater of service, are invaluable to historical record. For it is the story of the common soldier that reveals the true nature of the uncommon war they fought. Each and every one of them deserves our eternal gratitude for what they did. In my opinion, they are all heroes.
Since my grandfather passed away in 2007, the significance of this recording to me has grown immeasurably. By sharing it with the world, it is my hope that others will benefit from it, too.
