Julia Butterfly Hill is known for climbing a 1,000 year-old redwood tree in 1997 when she was 23 years old, and remaining there without touching the ground for two years, as part of a successful effort to call worldwide attention to the destruction of California's ancient redwoods. Since then, she has addressed the U.N., lobbied Congress, and continued to stand on the front lines of environmental and social justice issues all over the world. She is the author of The Legacy of Luna: The Story of a Tree, a Woman and the Struggle to Save the Redwoods and One Makes the Difference: Inspiring Actions That Change Our World.

  • Seems simple enough: modern people value lots of "stuff" more than we value many and varied relationships with other people and the world around us. In order to take an interest in other people, creatures and the world around us we need a "reason", which is usually tied to acquiring "stuff", never just for the sake of increasing general knowledge and social awareness. No one feels more disconnected to other people like those who reject this kind of thinking, will lose all companions.

  • Love. Trees. Earth. Mankind. Harmony. Feel it!

  • What is my role as a healer to this planet? I am a forester, I plan for future generations of people and forests. I evaluate what this land was before people entered it, the damage that has been done throgh past management activies, and I propose solutions, healing the legacy effects and promting a healthy future for the forest. I feel comfort knowing that I can do this at the same time as I offset use of non-renewable resources, and increase CO2 sequestration from the atmosphere.

  • Much of what she's really talking about is still very political and there's the real disconnect.

  • she is amazing.. very profound...

  • @DanceTheGrid sure, but what is actually the case is that we're caught up in the negative ego consciousness that deludes us into the seeing of seperation of things - this is what is meant by dissconection - the illusion of it. waking up from the illusion...

  • no one and no thing is disconnected...from anything else and it is all eternal

  • Wow, that is so well said! I say that all the time, but not as well. good going, julia.I was an anti-war protester for a long time but then realized that before I could create a movement I had to get people to combine with each other and with all life. So I am writing a book that I hope will help people connect instead of going to every protest.

  • You are not only what you think you are,you are all things. There are no boundaries other than the ones that you choose for the purpose of learning and serving in specific ways.
