The first Apnea Academy 1-day course from FreeDive Ireland in association with Apnea Academy. http://freediveireland.com
A great bunch of students - easy to work with and learned quickly. Theory & relaxation techniques were covered in Cliffoney village Co. Sligo; pool practise happened in the Pier Head Hotel in nearby Mullaghmore; finally they had to bring it all together in the ocean just outside Mullaghmore Harbour. See how they found it: http://freediveireland.com/index.php/what-people-say
Many thanks to Eugene Lambe, uilleann-pipe and flute maker in Co. Clare for permission to use his music. Both sets of reels are from his "Trip to Fanore" album. The first features 'The Girl that Broke my Heart' and 'Bobby Casey's' (on Eb Flute and Mandocello). On the second you hear 'Scanlon's Swattler' and 'The Five Mile Chase' (on Whistle and Bodhrán). This was my most challenging film to date. For three reasons.
1. I came face to face with my own diving limits. The constant up & down while trying to catch good footage of everyone was done without rest periods. That was tiring on the legs and lungs - which brought home the need to get fitter, improve my breath-hold and get some long fins so I can keep up with those who have their own!
2. The camera was physically hard to work. The display wasn't bright enough at times to see what I had within the frame so (despite many dives on the day) there was little useable footage. Also, finning with wrist bent to point camera ahead of me resulted in a lot of shake (sorry!). Especially when equalising.
3. The visibility. It was murky on the day so clear shots of the divers were only possible from about 3m or closer. At that distance the divers almost filled the screen making composition v difficult. Clips would have been nicer if I could have kept 4-5m or more from them... but I guess the ocean needed to be murky that day.
Despite all that, I'm looking forward to the next one! Because I'll be able to gauge how much my fitness, apnea and camera skills will have improved!
