The despicable practice of Honor Killing is often associated as peculiarly Muslim.

A classic feature film by a Greek director and based on a Greek novel suggests Honor Killing as the domain of hot-blooded ignorants everywhere, complete with the trappings of religion. The tragic murder depicted onscreen disturbingly has the approval of an entire village.

Even in India, some Hindus practice Honor killings. It happens a lot in the developing countries, especially the third world. Islam or its teachings have nothing to do with Honor Killings; the root of these crimes lies with cultural practices.

  • okk This is the island of CRETE known to be the most traditional and aggressive place in the entire country. Honor killings were very rare even in the 60's when the movie was filmed. They absolutely do not happen anymore ANYWHERE! The person spend lifetime in jail for doing this.

  • You sound more like a humanist rather than a "warrior," to your credit. But the point is not whether honor killings are rare or commonplace in today's Greece. (Although I don't believe this "macho" mentality has disappeared altogether, especially in rural Greek villages.) The point is that if they happened at all, the influence is not religious, but cultural. This important criterion is often ignored when honor killings are examined today, giving the idea that it is solely a Muslim phenomenon.

  • I smell a Turk behind this.

  • Grow up

  • ...It looks like the priest never taught his flock the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery. As a Christian leader, he just stood by and did nothing. He is a guilty as she was, even more so.

  • @telltruly phenomrnon killing???????????trash

  • @telltruly You talk too much.

  • @IanHunedoara8 If you do not mind Ian........please tell me how old you are. You have alot of knowledge it seems at least to me. I appreciate it and I feel you are also having a nostalgia for days of old that were full of meaning, rich in culture, and full of honor and values. Days of Besa and zakon........

  • @IanHunedoara8 Aaahahahaaaaa........you never fail to amaze me moj vlla Ian! Tomorr eh? :))) Oj Baba Tomorri ::)))) What will these Peloponesian and these Cretans and Athenians know that we are talking about now? Huh...tell me. They will say what is this Tomoori and this Lek and so and so....ahhhhh what can I say. Nostalgia I have for days of old, most of which I would hear from the elders with tears in their eyes at the remembrance of those days. JANINE JANINA what have your eyes seen

  • @alipashaofjanina2 Everyone wants to remake Greece in their own image. If the Parthenon was not meant to have a minaret, then the Mosque of Ali Pasha in Janina was not meant to be a museum display nor the Fathishumia a coffee house and folk dance centre- no one can have it both ways. The old gods were crazy and violent but were they from Olimbos or Tomorr?

  • @IanHunedoara8 True..........but try to argue this with some ignorant people from other parts of Greece who do not know this and want to speak. In Epirus this was the canon of the land. All Epirots now this and all their offsprings have at least heard stories about such canons. Oh Ian, what have we become that they try to strip up of our heritage??? How hard has this Greek nationalism and omogeneia idea tried to kill our distinct Epirot customs and culture.......

  • @alipashaofjanina2 According to Lek Gjak a priest or Hodzha is not allowed to interfere, even if he wanted to. In Vlahe we call this Leii Kanune. In Janina we were very aware of this but in Kriti they are following some dim memory of ancient law before the Gospels.
