With a large crowd of the faithful, Pope Benedict XVI prayed the First Vespers of the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, in St. Peter's Basilica on the evening of December 31st. He also sang the Te Deum, a hymn of thanksgiving for the year.

In his homily the Holy Father recalled how, with the Incarnation of the Son of God, Eternity entered into time, and the history of man is open to the absolute fulfilment of God.
