In the Dominican Republic, Professor Gates explores how race has been socially constructed in a society whose people reflect centuries of inter-marriage, and how the country's troubled history with Haiti informs notions about racial classification. In Haiti, Professor Gates tells the story of the birth of the first-ever black republic, and finds out how the slaves's hard fight for liberation over Napoleon Bonaparte's French Empire became a double-edged sword.

  • nice, this vid goes deep

  • Good job in portraying Dominican Republic as something out of a comic book *applause*. It is such a shame how he echos on a subjective idea of who Dominicans are and how they think. I would encourage him to take a walk through the entire Santo Domingo and all other Provinces, not just that small part of the Colonial Zone (which is the only part in the entire country which has a pure Spanish layout), where he will find monuments and statues of other freedom fighters and heroes who are NOT white.

  • I think this documentary misses the point in that we as dominicans are not

distancing ourselves from our afrrican culture, we are distancing ourselves from

Black People in the US. A black person in the us has very different ideas and values, than

black people that come from a sovereign country with culture, language, values and patriotism, blacks in american have never experienced that. Even Black Africans that immigrate to the us do not want to be associated with american blacks.

  • @cambi04 i thin what he says is partially true. but he should visit the museo del hombre dominicano where youll see a statue of lemba the african slave rebel.

  • In undergrad, I had an argument w/ a fellow student, who was Dominican from Bronx, NY. He was a student tutor for Spanish. He got offended when someone called him black. Now, being in America and having very dark skin, he's BLACK. No quesion, but he was almost disgusted with the term. From that discussion I learned that Dominicans had serious issues w/ racial and cultural identity. I'm glad I PROUDLY embrace being BLACK and a descedant of African Slaves.

  • I commend and follow Dr Gates work....but as a Dominican (born on the island) and raised in a Dominican household, here in the states (NY city & Boston)....it is important that the music he mentioned in the beginning as "merengue", it is not...the music that was being played can be classified as "guaguanco" from Cuba which is similiar to Salsa. Merengue, especially merengue tipico Dominicano (also known by Dominicans as "perico ripiao")......check it out if you have not...thanks!

  • LOVE BEING BLACK.

  • Dominicans are the best barbers and very nice people.

  • 21:12 Is white powder.... like do, you use?

    Thats deep

  • @BravaAl - Dominicans can be of any race.

  • in the bahamas they are 30% of the population and get discriminated against even WORSE! but since there all black dr. gates cant make a bias documentary about it, its easier to play the race card with the dominicans..

  • As far as I was taught in Portugal, 'Indios" are NATIVE of America. When Columbus got to America he was looking for India. So he called the Native Americans "Indios. That is why you have the "Indios" of the USA, Brazil, Latin America. Indios are the Native of America and "Indianos" are people from India, that was discovered after the "Americas". It seems that he wants to privilege on country over other just because they are darker, it's not very accurate or fair.
