Clementine is an American western folk ballad usually credited to Percy Montrose (1884).
The words are those of a bereaved lover singing about his darling, the daughter of a 49er (a miner in the California Gold Rush) who dies in a drowning accident.

(F) In a cavern, in a canyon excavating for a (C7) mine
was a miner, forty (F) niner and his (C7) daughter, Clemen (F) tine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
oh my darling Clemen (C7) tine
You are lost and gone for (F) ever
dreadful (C7) sorry Clemen (F) tine

Light she was and like a fairy
and her shoes were number (C7) nine
Herring boxes without topses...
Sandals (C7) were for Clemen (F) tine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
oh my darling Clemen (C7) tine
You are lost and gone for (F) ever
dreadful (C7) sorry Clemen (F) tine

Drove she ducklings to the water
Every morning just at (C7) nine
Stubbed her toe upon a (F) splinter
Fell in (C7) to the foaming (F) brine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
oh my darling Clemen (C7) tine
You are lost and gone for (F) ever
dreadful (C7) sorry Clemen (F) tine

Ruby lips above the water
Blowing bubbles soft and (C7) fine
But alas I was no (F) swimmer
So I (C7) lost my Clemen (F) tine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
oh my darling Clemen (C7) tine
You are lost and gone for (F) ever
dreadful (C7) sorry Clemen (F) tine

There's a church yard on a hillside
where the flowers grow and (C7) twine
There grow roses 'mongst the (F) posies
fertel (C7) ized by Clemen (F) tine

Oh my darling, oh my darling,
oh my darling Clemen (C7) tine
You are lost and gone for (F) ever
dreadful (C7) sorry Clemen (F) tine

  • What about "...and i kissed her little sister, and i forgot my Clementine"?

  • Thanks for putting these verses up, they give the song an extra bit of dark comedy. very nice

  • this song is weird

  • Then the miner, fortyniner, Soon began to peak and pine Thought he ought to join his daughter Now he's with his Clementine In my dreams she still doth haunt me Robed in garments, soaked in brine, Though in life I used to hug her, Now she's dead I draw the line How i missed her, how i missed her, How i missed my Clementine But i kissed her little sister and forgot my Celementine.
  • Not to criticise, i really like all your video's. Been browsing them all day today and i've tons of them in favorites now :-)

but i have a text of the song with 3 extra verses. I'll just put them for people who are interested if that's ok with you :-)

(i'll put it on next post because of the maximum characters on youtube posts)

    Greetings for Belgium

  • i love all of your videos! Keep up the work. You truly made me love these songs.

  • That's Huckleberry Hound's favorite song. He sings it as a running gag in almost most episodes.

  • such a sad song..................
