Ron Fernandez shows how to play a Fado Menor
on Portuguese Guitar and Spanish Guitar. The Portuguese guitar part is an authentic Fado Menor as played in the early 20th century. The music for the Portuguese part in this video is written out in notation and tablature at: www.fernandezmusic.com where there is an introductory lesson for playing the Lisbon Fado Guitarra.
The Portuguese Guitar was made by Manuel Cardoso in Odivelas, Portugal in 1982.. The Spanish Guitar was made by Felix Manzanero In Madrid, Spain in 1999.

  • I thank you for your compliment.

This coming year I will publish some old and new variations for the guitarra. I should mention also that I have just received a new introductory Fado guitar method with CD from Portugal by Cebolo. It will be on my Fernandez Music web site in a few days.

  • Awesome!

  • @jclaussftw Thank you for your nice comment and give another treat to Carl for me.

  • Can you make new lessons?? :)

Thanks for the help and the lessons!

  • @SpiritPedro Thank you for your comment. I will not have any lessons soon. I am researching old guitarra and fado music. There are complications with copyrights which prevent me from showing more modern fados. I have been hoping that my lessons (from a Gallego-Spanish-Polish American guy in California) would motivate players in Continental Portugal to post detailed lesson.

  • how much is a Portuguese Guitar? because i am wanting to learn how to play guitar and i would rather learn how to play a Portuguese guitar rather then a normal one because i am Portuguese and i want to play my Avo something beautiful

  • See my Fernandez Music website. I have many Portuguese Guitarras for sale. The guitarra in this Fado Menor video is my personal instrument from Manuel Cardoso made in 1980, it is not for sale. It has a 440mm string length and it is tuned dD aA bB ee aa bb (lowest to highest note). If you look at my 2 videos on Making Fingerpicks for Portuguese guitar you will see one of guitarras I have for sale. It is a Lisboa style 440mm scale guitarra-- with a case and string winder they start around $900.

  • Mind blowing skills! Thank you so much.

I tuned my 12 string (regular guitar)in the portuguese guitar pattern and have been practicing like mad. I got blisters on my fingers and cramps in my hands. !!!

  • Linda cancao saudacoes brasileiras

  • I just wanted to take the time to thank you for putting up this video as well as your website! My grandfather just returned from Portugal and brought me back a guitarra. I figured since I play standard guitar it shouldn't be all that much more complicated... Needless to say I was wrong lol. I was so discouraged when I couldn't find anything online pertaining to this instrument untill I came across your website. I just finished learning your video version of the fado and played it for my family

  • so cool!!!

  • what a beautiful guitar

  • @ItinerateWolfMop Well, according to a very quick research, both instruments may be remotely related.

  • @FernandezMusic Hah. I will. Keep up the good music.
