This video features Bulleid Westcountry class pacific,
no.34092, 'City of Wells' on her last mainline railtour. The train ran between Hellifield and Carlisle and return on 22nd.October 1988 and is seen on the outward journey at Horton in Ribblesdale and Shotlock Hill Tunnel and on the return at Ais Gill and Dent. 34092 was nicknamed 'The Volcano' by enthusiasts as a result of her often spectacular exhaust displays.
The opening shot shows the diesel assistance at the rear of the train which was required after some slipping near Stainforth. The loco is currently undergoing overhaul on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Once again the video was filmed on standard VHS so the quality is not the finest.

  • Great stuff!

You'll never get a repeat of the last shot. For some reason there's a 30mph speed restriction through Dent (in both directions) even though the track has been relaid and smoothed out sometime ago.

  • Thanks, shame about the speed restriction as it was a good spot to catch them coming around the curve

  • Thanks, yes looking forward to seeing her back, it'll be nice to film her in a better quality than this old VHS!

  • @nick33006 should have been compulsory, based on the evidence! Imagine what an unrebuilt MN would have been like with a Geisl.... OMG O_O

  • Nice footage, not long to wait now before she is back, role on 2013.

  • There was a photo recently in one of the magazines showing her under restoration at the KWVR. I suspect shortage of funds is slowing things down. I have some footage of her on the KWVR to upload at some point. She was a great favourite during the 1980's
