Paul Washer from Heart Cry Missionary Society says that God blackmails believers. He says ...

"Sometimes in discipline, God will pull away assurance from a true believer so that they may fear and seek him." (Sermon, "Assurance: Tests of True Faith")

"In order to discipline a true believer God might remove assurance from them, so that they might seek him again." (Sermon, "How to witness to the lost")

So, according to Washer, God deceives believers into thinking they're going to hell, even though they're actually going to heaven.

This contradicts the Bible, which says that the Finished Work of Christ always assures believers...

Psalm 55:22-23
Cast on Jehovah what He has given, and He will keep you; He will not give the righteous to waver, forever. [He will never allow the righteous to be shaken -- NAS]

Zephaniah 3:14-15
Shout for joy, daughter of Zion; ... Jehovah, the King of Israel, is in your midst; you shall not fear evil any more.

Clearly, believers never have their assurance shaken and never fear hell. This makes sense. Christ has done EVERYTHING and they need to contribute NOTHING. And doesn't the Perfect work of Christ, give them perfect certainty of mind?

Washer says no. And here's an analogy he uses to justify his view that there exist unbelieving believers...

"Let's say a trembling, trembling weak soul of a man comes to a great bridge and he begins to walk across that bridge with great fear and doubt and dread. No matter how small his faith, he's going to make it across." (Sermon, "The Heart of the Gospel")

Washer's analogy is flawed. The reason people doubt that a bridge will hold them up is because they think the bridge is weak. Now, God the Father says that Christ's work -- the Bridge of Salvation -- is NOT weak. He says it's "perfect", "the cornerstone", and "sure and certain". So, anyone doubting the Bridge of Salvation (Christ) is calling God the Father a liar.

I challenge Youtube users repentandtrustdotorg, Peacy and hetgow to show otherwise. They may think Washer has a "Shocking Message" and create a "Sermon Jam" or a "Paul Washer Project" video. However, the question must be asked -- is Paul Washer implying that the Gospel fails to assure believers?

  • "sometimes in discipline, God will pull away assurance..."

A man walks through a store with his son. He loves his son very much and has told him to stay by his side and not touch anything.

Sometimes the child stops to play with things he ought not play with... Sometimes the father stops to stay with him and gently tells him to "come along"

    Sometimes 3 or 4 times...

But sometimes, "in discipline", the father will pull away so that the son will be distressed upon seeing him walking away.

  • Your taking Paul Washer out of context... Although, your points sounds biblically correct, you have no idea what Paul is saying. therefore unless you were to actually meet Paul and ask him what his view on your criticizes were.. i would not be as bold to post a video like this up... Calling someone a false prophet because they were to say something they understand and others take it another way is risky..I say you watch all of Paul's videos and see the theme and the reasons of hard preaching.

Not everyone doubts God's word, especially NOT on a daily basis. Being anxious is not doubting God at all. And God is always in charge of one's life, whether you pray about it or not. If God doesn't want you to do something, you wont do it, simple as that.

  • @loveryplease

I hate hearing this crap, will you please tell us HOW he is taking Washer out of context?

I see this utterly stupid excuse almost every video I watch of Andrew's. Either SAY what Washer was "REALLY" saying or be quiet. Paul Washer doesn't have any idea what he's talking about. And you shouldn't need to hear a whole hour sermon to debunk a few errors, that is stupid when what Washer said is VERY easy to understand.

  • Dude what are you saying? it sounds like your saying that if a true believer EVER doubts God they are not saved. Everyone doubts Gods word probably on daily basis.

isnt being anxious about ANYTHING doubting Gods word? because he said dont be anxious. Anytime your making a hard decision or an important one and you dont pray and ask God about it arnt you taking matters into your own hands?

  • No he's right. God disciplined me and I was FREAKING OUT. 0.0 He took away the one thing in the world he knew would shake me. My ability to run. I ran track and it pays for my college. I got hurt really badly and it baffled me. I had always had an assurance that I was protected. He had done it all my life, I have escaped death 2 or 3 times.

But when I couldn't run and was at risk of losing my scholarship, I did the one thing I could do. RUN to God. He's blessed my so much more now than before.

  • I guess this guy has never read 'Job'

  • 'remove assurance' does not mean 'deceive'!!!!!!!!! so far from it!!! you're SO twisting his words, how about you listen to the rest of his sermons ? and there is a difference between being saved and knowing youre saved and Paul Washer talks about that in a lot of his sermons. Paul said many times that the work of Jesus is perfect if God saves you, youre saved! Period - its all finished and you can trust it completely. All who believe will be saved, but HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU BELIEVE?!

  • Paul Washer is a false teacher.

  • I don't see it as blackmail, but as chastening which humbles the person.

  • You need to stop speaking rashly my friend'

Paul Washer is speaking the truth andyou are rejecting sound correction

God chastises those he loves., if you do not feel chastised then you need to question your position with God
