This is a model of a one square foot pervious concrete pavement which displays the drainage performance of this material in low traffic / low impact applications such as sidewalks and bike lanes.
The pavement sample was provided by Angelle Materials in Denham Springs, Louisiana. The mix was designed according to ACI standards and is even colored tan for aesthetic purposes.
This model shows the pavement elevated above a reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) subgrade. We chose this subgrade as it is cheap, available, and green. The pavement is elevated to allow the viewer to see the drainage of the pavement itself. However, this model neither contains soil nor geotextile fabrics which will also be part of the subgrade.
In this video, approximately 75% of the gallon of water poured was retrieved. The losses occurred when water either deflected off of the pavement due to its intensity or saturated the dry aggregates. As one may notice, the pavement itself drains rather quickly.
All materials and construction were obtained and performed by Ryan McDonner of Hydrologic Group 6 (CE 4260) at Louisiana State University (Spring 2011)
I hope you enjoyed this demonstration.
