Red Bull Air Race pilots are required to complete the track and fly through the Air Gates following a predefined race track. Failure to do this correctly results in penalty seconds being added to their race time. For more serious breaches of the rules, pilots can also be disqualified.
Major changes 2009:
Incorrect passing of an Air Gate: 2 seconds (2008: 3 seconds)
Touching an Air Gate: 6 seconds (2008 10 seconds)

I discovered this event on Hulu, and the first one I watched, from Berlin 2006, they were going as fast as they could through Gate 1 and pulling up to 13.6g!
The commentators were really impressed! Nobody was talking about penalties or DQ.

nah, it happens, paul bonhomme got a DQ last year for an over-G in qualifying somewhere or other...they regularly pull 10s and 11s on half cuban turns. it's not that difficult for the top guys to go over 12 if they aren't careful.

Yah, but the pilots rarely go over 9 Gs so there really isn't a point to that, but I do understand what you mean. Thank you innovation for composite materials. :)

the G limit is because the planes are only rated by the manufacturers for +/- 12G. since they aren't designed for any more than that they ground the planes for a safety inspection if you go over it, hence the DQ. the entry speed limit seems a bit stupid to me too though...

WTH is with the speed limit on entry and the G limit. Those are stupid rules IMO. Leave it up to the pilot and don't disqualify him for flying too good.

Hope all these rules apply only during a race and not afterwards... wouldn't want to miss all those spectacular stunts some pilots perform after finishing their races
