@JPN850R I love the Zero's and the Japan WW2 fighters.All fighters IJN and IJA during 1943 were repainted in new official colors dark green/light grey or Dark green/natural alluminium.Mr Saburo Sakai is my favourite pilot ,I' ve reed dozens of time his autobiography,now I know by heart.The mustang is definitely the best ever.

@bf109e4trop san,
I've never seen A6M5 and later models painted in anything other than the traditional IJN dark green, so it is indeed intriguing. I'll have to do a bit more research; thanks for the input. After the war was over, Sir. Sakai had a chance to fly P-51D and said that it was the best fighter built during the war. I bought a $70, 1/32 Tamiya-made Mustang and didn't know that it had the same water-cooled motor as Spitfire.

@JPN850R Yes Sakai at the time of this duel flew with A6M2 model21 painted in white grey green official IJN marine colors (1942).The Model 52 whas introduced later in 1943 and painted in new official livery color in Dark Green/light gray.

Very epic battle, the Zero had speed & manuverability advantage. But Pug, in the tough Wildcat was a thinking pilot, putting every bit of knowledge to work. Sakai showed his experience, keeping pace & pumping bullets into the Wildcat. That was 2 pilots using their heads and getting the most out of their equipment.
