This is a funky version of Rocky Raccoon (Paul McCartney, John Lennon) played on piano and drums. I tried to sing it too but forgot how the words went. That's why I laughed at the end, because it was so ridiculous how badly I had forgotten the lyrics. I just gave up at that point and ended the song prematurely.

This video is an experiment in direct recording off the vintage Yamaha CP-70 piano, which comes with inductive pickups on all the strings. I am using a separate VCR for recording (not the camcorder tape) so that I can pipe the line-level audio signal directly from the mixing console. I also invited my awesome drummer friend Randy Teresi to participate in the recording. We always have lots of fun playing together. Hope you enjoy this too.

Recorded Feb. 4, 2008 in Davis, CA.

Mark Chang- piano, vocals.
Randy Teresi- drums.

Someday I wish to get some fancier equipment to do multi-camera scenes so that you can see Randy playing the drums and other camera angles.

The Yamaha CP70 stage piano is the same instrument used by many historic rock bands such as U2 (played by "The Edge" Dave Evans), ABBA, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel, Simple Minds, George Duke, Bruce Hornsby, Genesis/Tony Banks, Keane, Stevie Wonder, ELO, Genesis, Boston, Hall and Oates, Journey, Asia, Howard Jones, and many others. It is a grand piano with real hammer action and a steel strung harp, except there is no soundboard under the bridge. A set of magnetic pickups, each similar in function to a humbucker guitar pickup, is used to translate the string vibrations into a stereo audio signal with excellent gain-before-feedback characteristics and high fidelity sound.

  • I've been a fan of yours for a long time. I think we all know you're no Frank Sinatra when it comes to singing (like in five foot two "no no no no no that's no the words" lol but that's what I like about your songs you're unique. Everyone's entitled to their opinion but I've always divided people into 2 categories people that "get it" and people that "don't get it" and 23 people don't get it.

  • nice cover man, fuck the copycat covers this is your own version and its smooth and jazzy, i like the improvisations a lot

  • What were you singing!? I don't understand. This version would make Paul McCartney shoot himself.

  • roooocky is a raaccooooonnn!

  • aside from the Daniel Johnston vocal, it sounds kinda like what Elton John would do with it.

  • woah

  • You got some smooth hands brotha. Probably my favorite Beatles song, and those piano solo's are slick as hell.

  • Very nice!

  • lol, this guy is pastich'ing paul McCartney's pastiche of folk singing, FUCK YEAH, SOCK IT TO THOSE SNOBBY BEATLES

  • THis sounds like an old tape from Nectars...
