Take a short trip on this 1976 Volvo Ailsa with Van Hool McArdle bodywork. This film was taken in 1996 and the us has been under restoration at the South Yorkshire Bus Museum for a number of years now.

  • it is actually 1986 because black prince buses took this and another one in 1988 for use on service X51

  • It had passed into preservation when i took the film, and trust me it was 1996. I didn't have a video camera back in 1986. The oldest film i have i took in 1987 on a borrowed one.

  • Happy memories if these in service with Eastern Scottish Omnibuses Ltd and have a few photos on Flickr in Service

  • This one was all filmed in 1996

  • I would like to visit the South Yorkshire bus museum in May as I have six days off at that point.

  • She's a powerful beast.

  • I remember one of these on Woodseats Road running as a number 75 being stuck behind a failed Dennis Dominator. He'd pulled up so close to the DD that he couldn't pull out because the engine revs were not high enough to pull up the turbo, so we were just stuck there. He ended up revving the balls of it and then jamming it into first and we shot off like a rocket. How he didn't bugger the transmission I don't know...

  • I've driven an Ailsa, OSN 852Y, I enjoyed driving it, very very noisy and poor pulling power made it a liability on hills if you had to stop, I remember stopping on a hill fully laden, it was really really slow at pulling away, in fact I thought it wasn't going to pull at first!

  • Great Video. These buses were Irish built as far as I know.

Built at the Van Hool-McArdle workshop in Spa Road, Inchicore, Dublin, alongside the CIÉ Van-Hool Atlanteans. Aside from a few coaches & schoolbuses built by the VanHool-McArdle partnership, I think these were the only buses built for export before the plant closed.

  • even sounds like a 90's bus

    Hi.

You are right that most of the work has been done. The restoration is now over 3/4 complete. It just needs that final push to finish the job. The end result will be great! As they say, watch this space!
