The encouragers became the encouraged. The Doulos team were ready to spend time with disabled children and adults at Port Klang's Dayspring Training Centre. They played games with the young students, taught them some songs and ate lunch together. However, as the team were taken around the centre, they witnessed the staff's deep love for those they were looking after. Their caring approach had even lead several of the students' family members to be involved in community service. "I'm amazed by this place and what the director has done," said Steffi Vaupel (Germany). "I want to stay in touch even after we leave Port Klang."
Quieter Questions
2 Aug, 2006 :: Port Klang, Malaysia
Sounds of people being shown around Doulos often echo through the ship's corridors. Crewmembers regularly take people they have met for a behind the scenes look at life on board and guests usually ask more than a few questions! However the group with Haide Burgos (Argentina) and Felipe Boechat Asseruy (Brazil) were silent as they toured the ship. Their silence didn't stem from indifference though. The group were all deaf and the two crew were using sign language to explain different parts of the vessel. The visitors were wide-eyed as they were taken around the lower decks and finished their tour with cake in the dining room. "They asked a lot of questions and were so thankful for the tour," said Felipe. "And they even gave me a sign language name!"
The Perfect Hosts
2 Aug, 2006 :: Port Klang, Malaysia
Doulos has enjoyed excellent hospitality from the Star Cruise Terminal in Port Klang. "I don't think we've ever had a better berth than this," remarked Chief Mate Drew Given (UK). The management of Star Cruises not only opened their terminal to the ship, but also waived much of the port fees. Doulos deck and engine officers were invited to attend valuable training courses with Star Cruises. The connection with the cruise line operators extended beyond business. "This is actually a reuniting of old acquaintances," explained Drew, referring to the long relationship Doulos has had with Star Cruises. The friendship was also displayed between the crews of Doulos and two of Star Cruises' luxury passenger ships -- SuperStar Virgo and SuperStar Gemini. Friendly football matches were played whenever one of the cruise ships came into port, and SuperStar Virgo hosted over 100 Doulos crewmembers for a tour inside the luxurious floating resort.
