Christ ist erstanden!
Christ is arisen!

Christ ist erstanden!
Christ is arisen!

Freude dem Sterblichen
Joy to all mortals!

Den die verderblichen, schleichenden, erblichen
Who from corrupted, insidious,

Mängel umwanden.
inherited sin are saved.

-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

While the names Schubert and Goethe strike classical music enthusiasts as a first rate
poet and composer duo, their saga is one of unrequited admiration. While Schubert suc-
cessfully set over 60 of the poet's texts, Goethe shunned all of his efforts to solicit ap-
proval. Chor der Engel, or "Choir of Angels," comes from Goethe's famous tragic play,
Faust. Despite the joyful tone of this Easter text, Schubert's musical setting explores as-
pects of darker internal struggles with faith and human frailty, mirroring Faust's contem-
plation of suicide during this scene. The piece cultivates tension and avoids true resolu-
tion until coming to rest in the final chord. -AC
