"1000 bucks, 600 gigs" is his SSD price, so your 30 times cheaper disk is a $33 3.5" 7200rpm consumer model that gets maybe 100 IOPs. 30 * 100 IOPs is 3000 IOPs, not 44,000, and in any case you forgot to cost in 30 disk slots, which are themselves not free.
